Swiss company Nagra Audio has introduced the Compact Phono, a compact phono amplifier as indicated by its name. The manufacturer claims it delivers high-quality performance; however, it is not a multifunctional device, as it is designed exclusively for MC cartridges.
Nagra’s inaugural hi-fi offering, the PL-P, established a benchmark for phono amplifiers, as stated by the Swiss manufacturer. The design was significantly influenced by the highly regarded microphone preamp found in the Nagra IV-S reel-to-reel recorder. Following this, subsequent models like the VPS, BPS, Classic Phono, and HD Phono have continued this legacy of excellence, each introducing enhancements while adhering to Nagra’s fundamental design principles: sound precision, transformer-driven amplification, and elegantly simple engineering.
The latest Compact Phono upholds this legacy, featuring a chassis that mirrors the dimensions and design of the Nagra Streamer, crafted from a single block of aluminum. Despite its compact form, the designers assert that the Compact Phono does not sacrifice quality. Nagra has refined the signal path and controls to their most fundamental state, incorporating RIAA correction through a fully discrete Class A topology, premium transistors, and a dual-mono configuration.
A 10dB step-up transformer, produced by Nagra and also utilized in the VPS, is specifically designed for moving coil (MC) cartridges. Users can select a gain of either 47.5dB or 62dB, tailored to their system requirements. The standard load is configured at 100 ohms, with additional load options available through authorized Nagra dealers.
To guarantee exceptional performance, the Compact Phono incorporates a two-stage filter system within its internal power stage. For those desiring enhanced refinement, it can be paired with Nagra’s external MPS or Classic PSU power supplies using an optional Lemo to DC cable. Additionally, a specialized Compact VFS vibration control base is currently in development.
Despite its compact size and competitive pricing—which Nagra asserts is significantly lower than that of its rivals—it is important not to underestimate the Compact Phono. The company emphasizes that this unit is a highly ambitious product, crafted to uphold the standards associated with the Nagra logo on its front panel. Nagra claims that the Compact Phono directly benefits from the advancements and insights gained from the larger HD Phono and its internal turntable and cartridge systems.
