At the heart of the Denon DNP-2000NE is the HEOS multi-room streaming system, which lets you control Android and iOS apps and integrates Tidal, SoundCloud, Deezer, and Amazon Music (but not Qobuz). HEOS also plays content from a local file server or a USB drive connected to the rear panel.
The Denon DNP-2000NE network player has a low, full-size case with four anti-vibration feet. In the center of the figured aluminum front panel is a 3-line high-contrast OLED display (with the ability to adjust the brightness and turn off), to the right of which is the source selector button. Next is the joystick ring for navigating the menu (and controlling file playback modes) with the central Enter button, which is also responsible for the playback and pause functions. The left side of the facade has a USB port compatible with iPod/iPhone. On the left side of the front panel is the power/standby button with an indicator.
Denon DNP-2000NE is DLNA (1.5) certified and can connect to a local network – both via an Ethernet connection and via the built-in Wi-Fi module. Thanks to this, the player gets access to audio files on servers and computers on this network, and also works with web services and Internet radio. Spotify Connect and vTuner services are supported. Playback of formats such as FLAC HD, WAV, AIFF, ALAC and even a DSD stream is available. The Wi-Fi Sharing function is designed for Apple devices and WPS for fast secure Wi-Fi pairing, as well as WMM (Wi-Fi Multimedia) – a protocol that gives network packets of multimedia applications priority over “regular data”, which is expressed in fewer errors and more stable operation during their transmission. There is an AirPlay 2 function for Apple. The kit includes a standard remote control, but you can also control the streamer using a proprietary application installed on devices with iOS or Android. The built-in headphone amplifier features three stages (high/mid/low) to drive high-impedance headphones such as 300 Ω or 600 Ω.
The Denon DNP-2000NE isn’t just for streaming music. It can be used as a standalone DAC, with five digital inputs on the rear panel – 2 x TOSLINK, 1 x coaxial, 1 x USB and 1 x HDMI ARC – giving third-party components like TVs, games consoles and CD players access to its internal DAC; and that USB input is compatible with DSD128 and PCM up to 32-bit/384kHz.
The DAC conversion circuitry that takes incoming music streams and turns them into analogue is built around a quad-core ESS ES9018K2M reference DAC chip operating in “dual differential mode”. They are supported by Denon’s own Ultra AL32 Processing Plus technology, sample rate conversion mathematics and master clock system. Whatever your sources, connect the Denon DNP-2000NE to a built-in amplifier via its fixed outputs; or to a power amplifier via its variable outputs; or to a third-party DAC via one of its coaxial digital outputs or TOSLINK.
