Danish speaker company Børresen just unveiled their new floorstanding model, the M2. The designers say it combines sleek design with top-notch sound quality. Plus, the M2 comes packed with the latest tech upgrades. We’re still waiting on details about pricing and delivery, though.
The designers of the M Series speakers at Børresen aimed to push the boundaries of current technology and explore innovative realms of audio engineering. Their focus was on creating entirely new speaker components, developing effective methods to reduce resonance and vibration, and sourcing materials that provide exceptional qualities to elevate sound quality to an extraordinary level.
The driver basket represents a groundbreaking advancement, featuring a topology-optimized 3D-printed design crafted from zirconium. This material choice guarantees exceptional stiffness, significantly reducing vibrations and resonance. The structure behind the diaphragm effectively retains the energy it generates, aiming to minimize noise through a design focused on maximum rigidity. Extensive research utilizing computer-optimized finite element analysis led to the creation of this innovative basket.
Børresen has not only achieved remarkable rigidity in the basket but has also incorporated critical elements such as substantial internal damping and resonance management, which contribute to an extraordinary clarity in sound performance. The 3D printing technique allows for the cavities to be filled with zirconium powder, enhancing the basket’s damping characteristics.
The diaphragm used in the M-series midrange and woofers is engineered for optimal stiffness while minimizing noise. It stands as the most sophisticated and refined speaker diaphragm available, boasting the highest stiffness and the lowest resonance. To meet the stringent technological demands for this exceptional diaphragm performance, all components were designed, developed, and assembled in-house. Chief designer Michael Børresen and his team meticulously created numerous variants and models to achieve their unwavering goal of delivering unparalleled diaphragm performance for unmatched sound quality.
The diaphragm is composed of four layers fused into a single unit: two layers of spread tow carbon fiber, an aramid honeycomb spacer layer, and a titanium layer featuring an Ansuz Supreme coating. This innovative combination of materials endows the diaphragm with exceptional characteristics. The spread tow carbon fiber is engineered to provide optimal stiffness across multiple directions, significantly minimizing disruptive vibrations and resonances to an extraordinarily low level, including those above 8 kHz. Since the driver operates up to 2.5 kHz, any disruptive resonances are effectively pushed two octaves beyond the operational frequency range, ensuring minimal resonance interference.
The aramid honeycomb contributes an excellent stiffness-to-weight ratio in the vertical axis. Titanium excels in resonance control, enhancing the diaphragm’s natural and organic sound. The Ansuz Supreme coating further refines the diaphragm’s acoustic performance. This coating is applied to the titanium surface using a Hi-PIMS (High Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering) process, resulting in a finely uniform layer of zirconium, followed by tungsten, and topped with aluminum chromium nitride. This meticulous coating process elevates the music to an unparalleled level of sound quality.
Børresen has further enhanced its patented iron-free magnet system, utilizing iron-free drivers across all its speaker models. The inductance of these drivers is roughly ten times lower than that of traditional drivers. This already impressive low inductance has now been reduced to an extraordinary new minimum, approximately twelve times lower than that of conventional iron-based drivers. Additionally, due to silver’s superior conductivity—6-8% better than copper—the copper pole rings have been replaced with custom-made silver rings crafted in-house.
Advanced finite element methods are employed to linearize and optimize the magnetic flux field, improving driver movement and ensuring high efficiency and exceptional linearity.
The closed ribbon tweeter boasts an outstanding efficiency of 94 dB, functioning from around 2.5 kHz and above. With an incredibly low moving mass of just 0.01 grams, this fully concealed tweeter can operate at remarkable speeds, essential for revealing the most delicate and intricate sonic details across all music genres. Its exceptional durability enables it to manage extremely high transient peaks without causing ear fatigue, and notably, no transformers are utilized.
Børresen speakers utilize a series crossover configuration, allowing the drivers to share the same electrical current in the crossover region. This design ensures that the electrical current remains phase-locked throughout the crossover area. In contrast to traditional parallel filtering, where each driver receives distinct frequency and phase information, the innovative series filters effectively eliminate out-of-band currents, leading to a more coherent audio experience, as stated by the manufacturer. This cutting-edge technology elevates your musical experience to new heights.
For the crossover filter, Børresen has meticulously sourced the finest, most advanced components available. The coils are constructed from foil types, wrapped in paper insulation and vacuum-impregnated with resin, resulting in exceptional mechanical rigidity and stability.
The capacitors consist of arrays of small military-grade stack-foil types, known for their superior mechanical stability and minimal inductance, making them the best option on the market, both in performance and sound quality.
Metal strip resistors are employed for the tweeter damping resistors due to their remarkably low noise levels and minimal temperature coefficient.
The M2 model boasts a frequency response range of 30 Hz to 50 kHz and a sensitivity rating of 86 dB (1 Watt). Its dimensions are 129.2 x 36.2 x 52.5 centimeters (H x W x D), and it weighs 64.3 kilograms, with an impedance of six Ohms.
Soon, buyers will have the option to select between black and white finishes, although pricing and delivery details are yet to be revealed.
