MoonDrop, a Chinese brand, recently unveiled their latest innovation: the DiscDream, a portable CD player capable of playing digital audio files from a microSD card or PC memory. Developed with the expertise of a former Sony engineer who contributed to the iconic Discman player, the DiscDream represents a modern, technologically advanced iteration that eliminates the intermittent sound issues associated with earlier portable players. Featuring electronic data caching, physical damping, a high-precision Japanese-made motor, a professional-grade laser head, and audiophile oscillators, the DiscDream ensures high-quality playback.
Equipped with a built-in digital player powered by a 32-bit flagship Cirrus Logic DAC (384 kHz), the DiscDream supports various file formats including FLAC, OGG, WMA, MP3, and DSD256. It also includes a USB-C port for connectivity. The independent analog amplifier can drive a wide range of headphones, including planar ones, offering versatility to users. With a built-in battery providing up to 10 hours of continuous listening, the DiscDream was initially slated for release in September last year but is currently available for pre-orders at a retail price of $199.
